Track 5: ICT4D/Connecting Corners

5.1. Sustainability and ICT for development (ICT4D)

Anna Bon (speaker)

combines research and international project management in the field of Information and Communication Technologies for Development, at VU Amsterdam. Previously, she worked for the academic computer center SARA, and as an independent ICT consultant for IBM. Her research is about the question “how to extend the Web and make it accessible for all people in the world, even in low-tech environments”.  In 2010 Anna Bon joint the Network Institute of VU Amsterdam, and helped to set up the interdisciplinary research program W4RA (Web Alliance for Regreening in Africa) and the ICT4D course for master students. Meanwhile, as an international project manager, she managed academic collaboration projects in Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Colombia. She organizes and co-chairs VU’s annual international symposium “Perspectives on ICT4D”.

Victor de Boer (speaker)

is an assistant professor at the Web and Media as part of the Network Institute of VU University Amsterdam (VUA) and he is Senior Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. His research focuses on usage and design of semantic web solutions for knowledge sharing in Digital Humanities and ICT for Development. Victor has participated in a number of European and Dutch research projects including the FP-7 VOICES project, in which he developed hybrid information systems using (Semantic) Web and Voice technologies. He employs Semantic Web and Linked Data to make public information within and about development projects accessible to all. This innovative research has also resulted in a number of scientific publications, workshops and tutorials. These research efforts have started a consistent effort into ICT for Development at VUA including an ICT4D course at VUA.

Leonieke Mevius (chair)

Leonieke Mevius has been working in ICT for over 20 years, working for several employers, including four years at the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Leonieke's current position is head of Infrastructure Services Computer and team lead Cluster Computing at SURFsara. Besides this Leonieke is one of the project leaders for SURF's sustainability innovation program.

5.2. Sustainability and ICT for development (ICT4D) - Demonstration sustainable ICT4D applications

Francis Dittoh (speaker)

Francis Dittoh is an ICT4D researcher at VU and a web developer at the University for Development Studies in Ghana.   His research is about the development of sustainable ICT services about weather forecasts and  rain fall data for rural communities in Africa, who cannot access services on the Web because they do not have internet, because they may not speak English or even be able to read and write. The meteo services are extremely relevant for improvement of rain-fed agriculture.

André Baart (speaker)

André Baart is master student in Information Science at VU. For his ICT4D research André is building a sustainable software toolbox and a platform to facilitate the community of developers of ICT4D services. This software development toolbox will facilitate voice services in small under-resourced languages such as small African languages. This will support sustainability of local ICT services.
